This Summer, Our Family Business Chimney Clean Co. Gets a New Apprentice
At Chimney Clean Co., every chimney inspection, cleaning, and repair is built on something more than tools and training—it’s built on experience, craftsmanship, and a commitment to helping families keep their homes safe.
This summer, we’re excited to begin a new chapter in that story.
Chelsea, our daughter, a Mechanical Engineering student who recently completed her second year of college and is preparing to enter her third year, is spending her summer learning the chimney trade alongside our experienced team. Over the coming weeks, she’ll be gaining hands-on experience in chimney inspections, fireplace safety, chimney sweeping, masonry work, and the many skills that go into serving Bay Area homeowners.
For a family-owned business like ours, this is about more than training a new apprentice. It’s about passing knowledge from one generation to the next and continuing a tradition of service that has helped homeowners care for their homes with confidence.

Throughout the summer, Chelsea will work alongside our team as she learns about professional chimney inspections, chimney cleaning, fireplace safety, and the skills required to serve homeowners throughout San Jose and the Bay Area. Her apprenticeship offers a behind-the-scenes look at the work that helps keep chimney and fireplace systems operating safely and efficiently.
Choosing a Different Kind of Summer
For many college students, summer is a time to relax, travel, or work a seasonal job. Chelsea chose a different path.
Rather than spending her summer away from the family business, she decided to learn the trade firsthand and gain practical experience working alongside the Chimney Clean Co. team. It’s an opportunity to step outside the classroom, develop new skills, and better understand the work that has helped protect homes and families for years.
As she begins her apprenticeship, Chelsea will be learning not only the technical aspects of chimney and fireplace systems but also the importance of customer service, professionalism, and attention to detail—qualities that have always been at the heart of Chimney Clean Co.
Learning the Craft
Many people are surprised to learn how much knowledge goes into professional chimney care. Every chimney system is different, and every inspection requires careful observation, technical understanding, and practical experience.
Throughout the summer, Chelsea will be learning how to understand how chimney systems function, identify common chimney and fireplace issues, and recognize signs that may indicate a need for cleaning, maintenance, or repair.
She’ll also have the opportunity to see firsthand the importance of chimney safety and the role regular inspections play in protecting homes and families.
One of her first major milestones came when she stepped onto a rooftop for the first time. It’s a moment every chimney professional remembers. For someone new to the industry, it can feel a little intimidating. Yet Chelsea approached the challenge with confidence and curiosity, quickly adapting to a part of the job that many homeowners never get to see.
As the summer continues, she’ll gain experience assisting with inspections, observing repairs, learning safety procedures, and understanding the craftsmanship that goes into maintaining chimney and fireplace systems.
Where Engineering Meets the Real World
One of the most interesting aspects of Chelsea’s apprenticeship is the connection between engineering and chimney systems.
As a Mechanical Engineering student, she studies concepts such as airflow, heat transfer, pressure differences, and system performance. These same principles play an important role in how chimney and fireplace systems operate safely and efficiently.
While these topics are often explored in textbooks and classrooms, this summer provides an opportunity to see them applied in real homes throughout the Bay Area. From understanding why a chimney drafts properly to recognizing conditions that affect performance and safety, Chelsea is discovering how engineering concepts connect to everyday situations.
By working in the field, she’ll gain a unique perspective on how technical knowledge and hands-on experience come together to solve real-world problems.
It’s an opportunity to learn not only how chimney systems work, but also how practical problem-solving, communication, and craftsmanship help deliver quality service to homeowners every day.
A Family-Owned Tradition
At Chimney Clean Co., we’ve always believed that great service comes from continuous learning and a genuine commitment to our customers.
The opportunity to share our knowledge with the next generation is something we’re proud of. It reflects the same values that have guided our company for years: hard work, integrity, professionalism, and dedication to doing the job right.

For Dan and Jennifer Maas, Chelsea’s decision to spend her summer learning the family business was a meaningful moment.
“When Chelsea told me she wanted to spend her summer working with Chimney Clean Co., Inc., it was a real proud-parent moment. She’s headed toward a career in mechanical engineering, but she values hard work, staying grounded, and learning the family business. That means a lot to both Dan and me, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Family-owned businesses are built on relationships, trust, and the passing of knowledge over time. Chelsea’s apprenticeship represents more than learning a trade—it represents the continuation of values that have helped Chimney Clean Co. serve homeowners throughout the Bay Area for decades.

Chelsea’s apprenticeship is a reminder that behind every service call is a team committed to continuous learning, professional growth, and helping homeowners make informed decisions about the safety and maintenance of their homes.
Follow the Journey
This is only the beginning.
Throughout the summer, we’ll be sharing updates from Chelsea’s apprenticeship, including training milestones, educational insights, chimney safety tips, and behind-the-scenes looks at the work our team performs every day.
Along the way, we’ll explore how engineering principles apply to chimney systems, highlight lessons learned in the field, and share the craftsmanship that goes into keeping homes safe.
We invite you to follow along as we share Chelsea’s journey and celebrate the family values, expertise, and dedication that continue to define Chimney Clean Co.
