Gas Fireplace Cleaning – How Chimney Clean Co Professionals Do It Right

If your gas fireplace is starting to look foggy, dusty, or isn’t burning quite right, it’s time for a deep clean. Gas fireplaces are low-maintenance compared to wood-burning ones, but they still need professional gas fireplace cleaning to keep them running safely & efficiently.

At Chimney Clean Co, we’ve cleaned hundreds of gas fireplaces across San Jose, Redwood City, and San Mateo. Here’s a look at how our professional & highly experianced technicians handle gas fireplace cleaning—from safety checks to glass polishing.

Step 1: Safety First – Shut Off the Gas & Cool the Unit

Before we touch a thing, our expert technician will turn off the gas valve and ensure your fireplace is fully cool. This protects both your home as well as our team from heat or any gas-related hazards.

We also inspect the surrounding area to ensure there are no leaks or combustion risks.

Step 2: Professional Inspection

Our experts perform a full visual inspection of the unit, checking:

1.   Burner assembly and pilot light
2.   Signs of soot or corrosion
3.   Firebox integrity
4.   Gas connections and valves

If we notice any damage or any unusual buildup, we’ll let you know and suggest safe+best solutions.

Step 3: Glass Panel Removal & Cleaning

Our professional team carefully removes the fireplace glass (not as easy as it looks) and places it gently on a soft, secure surface. We then clean both the inside and outside of the panel using a non-abrasive, ammonia-free fireplace glass cleaner.

While some buildup from combustion can bake onto the glass and become extremely difficult — and sometimes impossible — to remove completely, we do everything we can to restore clarity and improve the overall appearance of the glass.

Step 4: Interior Gas Fireplace Cleaning

Once the glass is cleaned, Our experts turns attention to the inside:

  • 1.   Ceramic logs are gently brushed to remove dust without damaging their structure.
  • 2.   Burners and valves are vacuumed with HEPA-filtered tools to remove dirt and debris.
  • 3.   The firebox is cleared of any cobwebs, lint, or trapped particles.
  • 4.   We also check the venting system if accessible, especially in direct-vent gas fireplaces.

This deep clean improves the efficiency and appearance of your unit.

Step 5: Pilot Light & Ignition Testing

Our chimney cleaning experts inspect the pilot assembly and test the ignition. A clean and well-functioning pilot means no delays or irregular flames when you turn it on. If necessary, we adjust or recommend repairs to keep your unit in top condition.

Step 6: Reassembly & Final Checks

After all parts are cleaned, our technician will:

1.   Reassemble the fireplace logs in their original position
2.   Reattach the glass panel securely
3.   Clean exterior trims and vents
4.   Perform a full function test of the unit

You’ll get a clear, warm flame and peace of mind knowing your fireplace is safe.

Why Professional Gas Fireplace Cleaning Is Essential

Skipping maintenance can lead to:

1.   Cloudy, damaged fireplace glass
2.   Reduced heating efficiency
3.   Carbon monoxide buildup
4.   Costly repairs down the road

With Chimney Clean Co, you’re choosing certified professionals who treat every fireplace with care. We clean, inspect, and test each component—giving your home reliable, efficient heat all season long.

Smoking back

There are many fireplaces that seem to smoke back into the house no matter what is done. In our experience, the most common cause is that the fireplace simply needs to be cleaned. This is especially likely if the fireplace has gotten worse over time, that is, the smoking back is worse now than it used to be.

Several other possible causes of smoking back are problems with the damper, chimney cap, grate, firewood, or structural problems with the chimney itself. At Chimney Clean Company, we do a full inspection with every cleaning, or we can also do just the inspection if the chimney doesn’t need to be cleaned. This inspection is designed to reveal any causes of smoking back.

Broken chimneys

In the Bay Area, many chimneys were broken in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Usually, these chimneys are broken at or near the roof line, although sometimes they can be broken further down, even at the ground level.

We are fully licensed masonry contractors. We rebuild broken chimneys. If they are broken at the roof line, this usually entails taking the chimney part of the way down brick by brick, installing steel reinforcing bars, getting an inspection from a city inspector, then rebuilding the chimney back up around the steel rebar.

Missing mortar or damaged bricks

Over time, many chimneys develop places that are missing mortar between bricks, or damaged bricks, either inside the firebox or on the outside of the chimney. These areas can usually be repaired, either by replacing the missing mortar or replacing the bricks themselves. Items such as these can be dangerous because they can allow flames, sparks or hot gases to enter the structure of the house.

Water entry

Sometimes the metal that seals the chimney at the roof, called “flashing”, will come loose or develop leaks. In this case, water sometimes comes into the ceiling of the room and causes water spots and stains on the sheet rock. This flashing should be repaired before the water causes more damage.
